Innovating the Teaching of Innovation

Innovation can be formalized and innovation can be taught. Best practices and new research led to the innovation process presented in Creating Breakthrough Products, and providing the foundation for 25 years of teaching innovation of products and services at Carnegie Mellon. Most recently, expanded activities resulted in the creation of the Integrated Innovation Institute, a partnership between Engineering, Business and Design. Integrated Innovation cross-trains students and professionals in integrated methods across the three core disciplines of product/service innovation to become elite innovators. The Institute offers several professional masters degrees, research opportunities, executive education, and undergraduate courses. This presentation will trace the philosophy and history of teaching innovation and forming the Institute.
